As virtual reality (VR) companies are keen to let anyone listening know, the technology isn’t just going to be used for videogames. In fact South Korean electronics giant Samsung itself seems particularly enthusiastic to bring video content to its upcoming Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). This week it has been confirmed that Garage Entertainment will be bringing a new surfing series to the device starring Red Bull athlete Mark Matthews.
The surfing series is coming as part of a new partnership between Garage Entertainment and the Samsung SportsFlow app, which serves as a companion app for many popular sporting events. The two have worked together to create the FEARLESS channel, which stores over 1,000 on-demand sports movies. A number of VR videos have also been created featuring Mark Matthews in the first surfing videos ever to be shot in VR. It’s not yet clear when these episodes may become available.
“We are so honoured to be part of this exciting new partnership with Samsung,” said Michael Lawrence, CEO of Garage Entertainment. “At Garage, our business plan is built on pioneering new technologies such as Virtual Reality, developing alternative content delivery platforms and nurturing international partnerships such as this one with Samsung SportsFlow.
Gear VR is thought to be launching before the end of 2014 as an Innovator Edition aimed at early adopters and developers. Samsung is yet to officially date or price the device, which runs with its Galaxy Note 4 smartphone. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all content coming to Gear VR, reporting back with all the latest updates.
