VR Viewing Platform Riftmax Theater Launches Kickstarter Campaign

While high profile and well funded companies continue to talk about virtual reality’s (VR) potential as a social platform, the team at Internow Games has spent much of the past two years acting on that potential. The developer is responsible for Riftmax Theater, an already popular VR theatre that is currently available in Beta form. This week the studio has introduced a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the software, although it’s approaching things a little differently than other developers.


Riftmax Theater allows players to meet up online and watch 2D, 3D and 4D videos as well as host unique events such as karaoke parties and even on-stage interviews and performances. Players can meet and chat as they play Youtube videos of watch live streams. It’s even possible to create your own TV shows by controlling cameras. The experience is being developed with the Unity engine and also includes a lobby that features a piano bar, arcade, nightclub and rooftop garden.

Internow Games launched its Riftmax Theater campaign with a base goal of just $1 USD. The team reasoned that is wasn’t looking for a ‘get rich quick’ scheme or to set an unachievable goal but will devote any money raised to generally improving the experience. Of course, the developer has already far exceeded this goal, having raised nearly $5,000 at the time of writing. This money will go towards the developer’s stretch goals, including a camera control interface, unique theatre types and a customised avatar creator.

The developer still hopes to raise at least $8,000 to include a drive-in theatre and space theatre theme in Riftmax Theater, with two unrevealed stretch goals still to be unveiled. Given that the experience is free, backer rewards include exclusive in-game items and events such as avatar outfits for $5 and access to a Backer party at $15. The campaign is due to close on 17th November 2014.
