Anarchy Arcade Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Extend Development

Traditionally, Kickstarter crowd-funding campaigns are run so that creators can fund their projects from scratch. Sometimes however developers use the platform as a means of additional funding to add polish to a product that already exists. This is the case with Elijah Newman-Gomez’s Anarchy Arcade, a social virtual reality (VR) platform in which players can bring their PC desktops to life using the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).

Anarchy Arcade allows players to build their own personal 3D spaces to replace the standard PC desktop. Using Valve’s source engine, players can create and share new locations that they can then populate with interactive objects that will act as shortcuts to other PC applications that can then be viewed in the virtual world. It’s possible to launch PC videogames and play them as if they were simply arcade installations or watch video content, listen to music and even browse the web in multiplayer.

The title is actually already available via Steam Early Access for free and could be released in December 2014. However it’s the developer’s hope to raise at least $1,000 USD via Kickstarter in order to delay the full launch by at least a month and add many of the community-requested features. For a $1,500 stretch goal the team will add 3D artist BlackStormy to aid development during this month, and at $2,000 the developer will continue to build the experience for two months in total.

Though the title is free, a variety of in-game rewards are available for backers. These include an in-game prop for $2 and Kickstarter-themed models and cabinets for $10. Backer rewards continue up to $1,000, where the developer will recreate a virtual version of the backer’s offices to be included in Anarchy Arcade. The campaign is due to close on 22nd December 2014.

VRFocus will continue to follow Anarchy Arcade, reporting back with any further updates on the title.
