Dreamworks VR Shorts Have Been Made, Waiting on an Audience

Dreamworks Animation has had its name tied for virtual reality (VR) technology on a handful of occasions in 2014. Most recently the company revealed its own app for Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) in Dreamworks: 20 Years of Dreams and Laughter, which simply showcased a trailer for Penguins of Madagascar in 3D. Speaking earlier today at the 2014 Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) the company’s Brad Herman revealed that it has more Dreamworks VR content to share, it’s just waiting on the right audience.

Herman, who works as the head of the company’s DreamLabs division, revelaed as much during a ‘Creating Realistic VR-Animated Videos’ panel at the show. He stated that the company had already produced a series of animated shorts for VR, but wouldn’t be releasing them until there was a market for them. Given that this panel took place at SDC, it could be that this series is eventually released for Gear VR, although this is unconfirmed at this time. The shorts were written just as the company writes its traditional 2D movies.

Over the course of the past few weeks a range of VR movies have made themselves known, although most of these belong in the horror genre. It will no doubt be refreshing to experience some more colourful exploits from the studio that created the likes of Madagascar and Shrek. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all VR-related content and is at SDC all this week to bring you the latest VR updates.
