Elite: Dangerous Oculus Rift Support Updated in New Beta

Yesterday VRFocus reported on news that the final build of the Beta for virtual reality (VR) compatible space simulation title Elite: Dangerous would be launching imminently. Frontier Developments gave fans a heads up on the Beta’s arrival, detailing a few of the more significant updates for the title. Now that the update has hit, a more extensive changelog has arrived, revealing that Beta 3.09 also updates support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), utilising the most recent version of the device’s software development kit (SDK), 0.4.3.

Using SDK 0.4.3 should increase Elite: Dangerous‘ performance with the Oculus Rift, although it’s not the only VR related update found in the new version of the Beta. Frontier Developments has also added a number of fixes to the VR support, including issues with the title’s loading screen when viewed with the Oculus Rift. A fix for players being unable to turn on fullscreen mode when the Oculus Rift is set to Direct mode has also been made, as has an issue with galaxymap billboards rotating. Finally, the fullscreen toggle option no longer works with the Oculus Rift.

These updates arrive ahead of Elite: Dangerous Gamma 1.0 build that’s due to launch on 22nd November, the same day that Frontier Developments hosts its Elite: Dangerous Premiere Event in Duxford, UK. Fans can expect new announcements and footage at the event, which will be livestreamed. Of course, this is all part of the build up to the launch of the full version of Elite: Dangerous on 16th December 2014, complete with full support for the Oculus Rift.

Frontier Developments have made headlines this week by announcing that it is dropping offline support for the title, which founder David Braben has said would be ‘poor quality’. VRFocus will continue to follow the Elite: Dangerous Oculus Rift support and the title’s progress in the build up to launch, reporting back with any further updates on it.
