UPDATED: Immersive VR Space Experience Cosmonaut Launches Greenlight Campaign

Most virtual reality (VR) space simulation titles pit players in the cockpit of a spacecraft to take part in sci-fi dogfights. That isn’t the case with Cosmonaut, a new immersive space simulation title from indie developer Ground Control Studios. This week sees the title launch a Steam Greenlight campaign hoping to secure enough positive votes to be approved for sale on Valve’s digital PC store come full launch. When it does launch it will feature full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) along with Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensor.


The developer is keeping tight lipped on story details for Cosmonaut, though has revealed that it will be a first-person experience in which players must survive in space after becoming involved in ‘a set of complex circumstances’. The title features a non-linear plot in which places can explore both the outside and inside of a space station. Players will have to look after their character by managing O2 supplies and avoiding impacts to the visor on the space suit that they wear.

Cosmonaut is a game about survival, exploration and cunning,” the developer states on the title’s Greenlight page. “Everything around you can kill you, the suit can get torn from shrapnel, your visor can break from impacts. Your fuel, oxigen and suit power are limited, so you must find ways to replenish them. On the other hand, most things around you are usable, so you must explore the environment to find tools, supplies and clues to unravel the plot.”

Cosmonaut will see an Early Access release to secure additional funds. The full title will consist of 15 seperate acts. It’s currently not clear just how Kinect itself will be implemented.
