Job Listing Suggests Apple VR Interest

Many large technology corporations have been tied to virtual reality (VR) over the past few years with Samsung and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) leading the charge with their respective Gear VR and Project Morpheus head-mounted displays (HMD). One name that VR fans haven’t heard as much as they might have thought they would however is Apple. The iPhone maker has had fleeting rumours linking it to the technology in the past and even a posted patent that can be seen below, suggesting it was developing its own HMD last year, but has kept quiet on any VR plans ever since. Now a new job listing has suggested that the company may be getting involved with VR.

Late last week Apple’s recruitment page posted a listing for an App Engineer that will “create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing.” The role requires candidates to be familiar with VR and augmented reality (AR) development. The successful candidate will help with creating new user interface (UI) and applications for ‘ next generation software experiences.’

This doesn’t link Apple to VR hardware so much as software, then. Could the company be planning new interfaces for iPhone compatible HMDs? If so, would it really go to such effort without its own VR hardware? Last year’s HMD patent does suggest that this could also be on the table for the company.

Earlier this week Cordon Media launched an IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign Pin? VR, an iPhone 6 case that doubles as a VR HMD. Plenty of other examples of smartphone-based HMDs are already out there, meaning that iOS operating system (OS) devices are already no stranger to VR technology. Could an Apple VR HMD really happen?

Just what Apple has planned for VR is unknown, then. VRFocus will continue to follow the company and its work with the technology, reporting back with any further updates on it.
