New Caffeine Video Looks at Shadow Effects

It’s been a while since indie developer Incandescent Imaging has provided an update on its upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible horror videogame, Caffeine. The Australian-based developer has been working on the title throughout 2014, although has kept a low profile following a number of crowd-funding campaigns that have had varying success. This week the developer has released a new look at Caffeine, specifically focusing on its shadows.

The developer has released a brief new clip of the title which can be seen below. It takes a look at the Real-Time Distance Field Ray Trace Shadows that are made possible using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 development tool. In some shots a light source can be seen dynamically creating shadows while another shows how objects such as fans can distort the lighting. It’s this engine’s integration that is also making support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) with the PC version of the title possible.

Caffeine is a first-person experience set on an abandoned caffeine mining facility in space. Players are tasked with investigating the facility and discovering what has happened as they solve puzzles and avoid traps. VRFocus will continue to follow Caffeine, reporting back with any further updates on the title.
