Oculus Rift’s Latest Prototype Shown Off at 2014 Web Summit

Many have wondered what would become of the Oculus Rift’s head-mounted display’s (HMD) latest prototype, named Crescent Bay, since it was first revealed at the Oculus Connect developer conference in September 2014. Creator Oculus VR debuted the virtual reality (VR) kit by stating that it represented a significant stride towards the eventual consumer version of the device. Since that time the company has gone back to showing its second development kit (DK2) at industry events. That said, Crescent Bay has been exhibited once more at the Web Summit in Dublin, Ireland last week.

As a video on CNN Money confirms, Oculus VR took its newest prototype to the event which also saw CEO Brendan Iribe take part in an on-stage conversation in which he confirmed that the device’s release was still ‘many months‘ away. Looking at the video, it appears that the setup for Crescent Bay was very similar to the one seen at Oculus Connect, with the user standing up to experience a range of new demos. At the time Oculus VR stressed that the Oculus Rift was still a ‘sitting experience’ and had those that tried Crescent Bay sign a health and safety form before trying it.

It appears as if Crescent Bay will continue to be showcased ahead of the reveal of the consumer version of the Oculus Rift, then. The kit improves upon the Oculus Rift DK2 with a higher resolution OLED display, full 360 degree positional tracking and integrated audio.

The device has recently been shown off to the developers of XING: The Land Beyond. Could the company also be planning to bring the device to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2015? At the last show it debuted its Crystal Cove prototype at the event, so it does seem possible. A release date for the anticipated consumer version of the kit is yet to be revealed. VRFocus will continue to follow all versions of the Oculus Rift, reporting back with any further updates on the device.

  1. i for one am not looking forward to the cv release. When that happens I will not be doing any more work on the house or attending my place of employment and maybe die of starvation or dehydration due to being under the hood of the rift for all hours of the day. My wife will probably kill me.
