Oculus VR to ‘work closely with Samsung to develop more products’

Next month sees the launch of the anticipated Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) in the US. The device is the result of a collaboration between both electronics giant Samsung and VR specialists Oculus VR and marks one of the first full consumer VR releases for the industry. Its launch will prove to be significant milestone in the history of consumer VR and, according to Oculus VR, it could be just the beginning.

That is according to company CEO Brendan Iribe, who has stated that Oculus VR will continue to work with Samsung on ‘more products’. Iribe said as much during a talk at South Korea’s third annual Startup Nations Summit held in Seoul, as reported by CNET. “We’ll work closely with Samsung to develop more products,” Iribe said. Note that the CEO doesn’t specifically state that the company will be working on future iterations of Gear VR, which have already been promised.

“We successfully launched the Gear VR with Samsung this year and I’m sure we will continue close relation with Samsung, as always,” Iribe continued. These comments seem a little premature given that Gear VR hasn’t actually launched yet, though the CEO is likely referring to the process so far. On a software front, Oculus VR will certainly continue to work with Samsung, as it’s the Oculus Home digital storefront through which all VR content on Gear VR will be sold.

Gear VR will launch at a price of $199 USD as an Innovator Edition aimed at early adopters and developers. The kit will initially feature a free store before adding a premium option later down the line. Yesterday screenshots reportedly taken from a Galaxy Note 4 seemed to reveal the launch line-up for the device. VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR as it heads towards launch, reporting back with any further updates.
