Pinć VR Launches IndieGoGo Campaign for iPhone 6 Case that Morphs into VR HMD

With so many smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) now revealed and Samsung’s Gear VR leading the charge, it can be hard for companies with similar products to stand out. It might be easy to pass off Pin? VR as yet another HMD with little to offer, but take a closer look at this iPhone 6 compatible kit and you’ll find some unique innovations that help it stand out from the flood of other products. This week sees creator Cordon Media launch an IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign to raise money for the kits development.

At first glance, Pin? VR appears to be yet another HMD for Apple’s iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. However the device cleverly doubles as a case for the smartphone, offering protection when not in use and then folding out into a full HMD resembling a set of glasses that straps around the user’s head. Crucially, the kit works with two optical control rings worn on the user’s index fingers to allow for multi-touch finger-tracking control and navigation using the phone’s camera and an asymmetrical lenses that enhances its field of view (FOV).

The next part of Pin? VR’s appeal is a free dedicated app that will allow users to control their phone in a VR environment. The company envisions this app being used with many of the functions of a modern smartphone including messaging as well as web navigation and shopping. “We see the opportunity for VR as much broader than just gaming,” Cordon Media president Milan Baic says. “Areas like everyday computing, productivity and commerce are very interesting for us.”

Cordon Media is looking to raise $100,000 CAD through IndieGoGo. This money will go towards refining the ergonomics of the HMD itself as well as improving the rings and releasing the software development kit (SDK) for the iOS development community. Those interested can secure a Discovery Edition version of Pin? VR for a pledge of $99, with the kit expected to arrive in June 2015. A set of three HMDs is also going for $249. The campaign is due to end on 23rd December 2014.

VRFocus will continue to follow Pin? VR, reporting back with any further updates on the kit.
