Report Suggests Samsung Funding Some VR Titles

The wait for solid release information on Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) continues long past the kit’s suggested release window in mid-October 2014. It’s currently unknown when the company will share more about the hardware, although rumours this week have suggested that the South Korean technology giant is in fact looking to invest in software to support the kit. Should a recent report be believed then the company has already started doing so.

The Korea Herald cites a source close to the matter in saying that Samsung is looking to financially support developers and encourage them to bring content to Gear VR. According to the source the company has already invested in a ‘local mobile role-playing game developer’. Presumably, ‘local’ refers to South Korea itself, though this isn’t confirmed. The developer is said to be releasing a title for Gear VR ‘soon’, though no specifics were provided on what this title may be.

In fact, even The Korea Herald’s source is making a title for Gear VR. Samsung’s search is also said to be international, meaning that western developers may well also benefit from funding, though specific examples were not given. The company is reportedly making the move to help start up its VR business in the face of slow smartphone sales. Gear VR itself runs with the new Galaxy Note 4 handset, featuring a Quad HD display. Users simply slot the device into a Gear VR, pressing its screen up against a pair of lenses.

There are already a wealth of VR titles coming to Gear VR, including the likes of E McNeill’s Darknet and Omega Agent from The Room developer Fireproof Games. The device is set to launch with a free store consisting of demos and experiences before launching a premium version later on. VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR and its compatible videogames, reporting back with the latest updates.
