Faceted Flight Launches Steam Greenlight Campaign

Back in September 2014 VRFocus reported on the launch of a demo for a new virtual reality (VR) compatible flight simulation experience named Faceted Flight. Indie developer The Dept of Silly Stuff has since been displaying the title at a number of events such as Unite 2014, the Oculus Connect developer conference and Texas-based VR Meetups in Dallas and Austin. This week sees the team move the title into its next stage with the launch of a Steam Greenlight campaign for Faceted Flight, hoping to raise enough positive votes to secure a launch of Valve’s digital store.

As the developer explains, Faceted Flight aims to capture the ‘exhilaration of flying’ within a videogame that supports the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), with an emphasis on eliminating simulator sickness. Players pilot a Hover Jet from its cockpit across unique, stylised areas. The final title will feature a range of modes, although the currently-available demo includes a Ring Attack mode in which players must fly through as many rings as possible in the given time limit. The developer also teases that it has added NPC AI racers and has ‘exciting plans’ for multiplayer in the future.

Faceted Flight plans to launch an Early Access version on Steam before moving ahead with the full launch. The developer states that this will give players the chance to test new levels, modes and vehicles before anyone else, giving some feedback that will shape the final version. That pre-release version is expected in early 2015, although a specific date is yet to be provided. For now, the demo version of the title can be played with the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2).

VRFocus will continue to follow Faceted Flight as it moves towards release, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s progress.
