New VR Title Adopted Casts Players as a Boston Terrier

Virtual reality (VR) lets users become entirely different people, but what about animals? Will the technology convincingly allow players to feel like they’ve become a household pet? That’s what indie developer Clockwork Demon is looking into with Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) support for its newly-announced title, Adopted. Due for release on PC in 2016, this first-person videogame casts players as a recently rescued Boston Terrier in what sounds like a VR experience unlike anything that has come before it.

In Adopted players control Luchador, shared between young three owners: Marisa, Wyatt and Laurel. The entire experience takes place within the course of one night as the three undergo a particularly stressful evening. Players will be able to choose who to help and who to hinder by barking, chewing, sniffing and sprinting their way through situations, with every option affecting the rest of the videogame. As can be seen in a trailer below, players will need to think carefully to help the housemates avoid dangerous situations such as kitchen fires and more.

The idea for Adopted began in October 2013, when Clockwork Demon co-founder Caleb Moore discovered that his own Boston Terrier has passed away while he was on honeymoon. Having reflected on the time he spent with his spent and how it had affected his relationship with his new wife. Consulting his colleagues, the team decided to work on a title influenced by these events. “We want players to feel torn between their relationships with owners and constantly ask how they should spend their time and who they should be concerned about next,” said Clockwork Demon co-founder Leo Glass.

With release not expected until 2016, hopefully the consumer version of the Oculus Rift will be out before Adopted arrives, allowing for full integration. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
