Oculus SDK 0.4.4 Beta Released

While Oculus VR is pushing ahead with work on the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) the company also continues to improve upon its software development kit (SDK) for teams to easily create VR content. In late October 2014 the company released SDK v0.4.3, which was only recently integrated into Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 development toolset. Despite this, Oculus VR has today released the latest version of the SDK, v0.4.4 Beta.

A number of improvements and fixes highlight this latest update including an overall simplified implementation of OculusRoomTiny to help demonstrate rendering setup with D3D11. The company has also returned the vignette for both the Oculus Rift first and second development kits (DK1 and DK2), though developers can default to no-vignette on DK2 to maximise the kit’s field of view (FOV). In terms of fixes, there’s also a fix for a black screen bug when using the Unity DX11 build and Extended mode.

Many of these updates appear minor, then, but will no doubt be instrumental in improving the development of VR videogames. Just when a consumer version of the Oculus Rift will finally launch for developers to sell these videogames on is yet to be revealed. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all updates surrounding the Oculus Rift, reporting back with any progress.
