Oculus Sets New Weekly Content Update Schedule

With the US release of the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), Oculus VR is slowly expanding into the realms of content management along with hardware development. With its Oculus Home app currently serving as the only way to download VR videogames and experiences for the device, consumers are going to be depending on regular content updates from the company from here on out. Fortunately, Oculus VR has this week confirmed a new weekly schedule for when fans can expect new releases.

Speaking in the list for this week’s store update over on Reddit, Oculus VR confirmed that it would be launching new titles onto Gear VR every Tuesday. Not only that, but the Oculus VR Share Beta, a software portal for free PC videogames and experiences that support the Oculus Rift HMD, will now be arriving every Thursday. In the last few weeks Oculus VR has managed to be fairly regular with updates for the latter service, although has missed one or two weeks and usually isn’t delivering them on the same day each week.

It’s an early sign that Oculus VR is preparing to be a strong service provider for consumer HMDs when they are commonplace. Although Gear VR is available for all to buy in the US, it’s still largely thought of as a developer kit, with only free experiences currently available on the store. No doubt as the release of the consumer version of the Oculus Rift draws closer the company will look at how it can best distribute compatible videogames and experiences. Whether that will be through a new version of Oculus VR Share or via an entirely new service remains to be seen.

VRFocus will continue to follow both Oculus VR and Gear VR, reporting back with any further updates on either.
