Radial-G: Racing Evolved

Radial-G Launches on Steam Early Access

Despite taking less than a year, it’s felt like a long journey for virtual reality (VR) compatible sci-fi racer Radial-G to get to its Steam Early Access release. The title, developed by indie team Tammeka Games, fell short of crowd-funding on a Kickstarter campaign earlier in 2014, but announced a triumphant return with funding shortly thereafter. Now, after all of these ups and downs, Radial-G is finally available in pre-release form on PC, armed with full support for the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD). It can be purchased for £9.99 GBP.

Radial-G takes inspiration from classic sci-fi racing experiences such as F-Zero X and Wipeout, filling a gap left by these series’ recent absence. Players race high-tech vehicles around tubular courses, competing across a variety of modes. The pre-release version of the title includes three tracks set in one main environment, with a selection of three different ships to race. A total of sixteen players can currently compete online, although this number will double to 32 for the eventual full version.

Tammeka Games only intends to keep Radial-G in an Early Access state for three months maximum, although it will continue to update and improve the experience even as it moves to a full release, aiming to make it a must-have by the time the consumer Oculus Rift finally launches. The Early Access version is priced lower than the full edition and those that buy in now will be able to upgrade later on at no additional cost. Early Access players will also have their names included in the thanks section of the title’s credits.
