Street View-Based EarthVR-MMO Launches Demo on Oculus Rift

Many virtual reality (VR) fans have thought about pairing Google’s popular Street View service with VR technology such as the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Some developers and companies have already put this concept into practise albeit in a limited manner, giving fans a look into factories and more. However indie developer Joaguin Keller has recently launched a sample of an ambitious new VR experience that uses Street View images to create a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) videogame.

That videogame is EarthVR-MMO, a first person experience that the developer hopes will bring players together to interact in images of the real world. In its current form, the title uses the Oculus Rift HMD to allow users to view Street View images in VR, although the sample is yet to add online support, in which players will have their own avatars that will presumably appear in front of the player for them to start interacting with.

The sample version of EarthVR-MMO is currently available through the official Oculus VR Share Beta. The developer has reasoned that full functionally for the title will be coming in a ‘few more weeks’. It’s not clear what additionally functionality will also be added, if any. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on its development.
