Dreadhalls Dev Finishes, Submits Gear VR Version

One of the first titles announced for Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) when it was revealed in 2014 was Dreadhalls from indie developer White Door Games. The first-person horror experience had already been confirmed for the Oculus Rift PC HMD, but a Gear VR port was revealed just as soon as Samsung lifted the lid on its new kit last September. This week sees the developer announce that it has wrapped up development on the mobile version of the experience.


White Door Games confirmed as much in a recent email sent to fans. The studio has already submitted this version of Dreadhalls to Oculus VR for evaluation. Should it pass the company’s tests then the title will be appearing on the Oculus VR Store on Gear VR in the ‘near future’. Now that work on the Gear VR version is done it is the developer’s intention to focus on the Oculus Rift edition, which it notes should include some features that aren’t making it into the Gear VR release due to time constraints and hardware limitations.

Dreadhalls tasks players with escaping a maze-like complex as they are hunted by monsters. The experience features procedurally generated environments, meaning that the area’s layout changes every time the player dies. The title began life as a demo foe a 2013 VR Jam. The developer stated that it was ‘very happy’ with how that demo has evolved into a full experience and believes that ‘it still retains that same “feel” that people loved on the prototype, but much more expanded and upgraded.’

For those hoping to experience Dreadhalls with the Oculus Rift, the developer has launched a new version of the demo on PC, fixing some of the issues found when used with the device’s second development kit (DK2).
