UPDATED: Gear VR Appears on Swedish, Belgian and German Samsung Sites With Shipping Date

Samsung’s smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) Gear VR has been available in the US since December 2014 but the company and partner Oculus VR are yet to share solid dates for an international release. It would appear that a European launch is nearing, however, as the device has recently shown up on three of Samsung’s official regional websites, suggesting that the kit will be shipping in the very near future.

Gear VR pages can currently be found on the official Samsung websites in Sweden, Belgium and Germany. Crucially, the Swedish page notes a delivery date of 30th January 2015, suggesting that the kit will be arriving next Friday for that country at the very least. The kit is listed for €199.99 EUR in Germany, which works out to £153.22 GBP and $231.50 USD. The Belgian price is similarly listed at €199.90 while the Swedish price is 2,390 kr SEK.

After looking around at Samsung sites for other European countries it appears that the UK and French versions of the site don’t list the device as of yet. That said, if the Gear VR rollout is starting to commence then these regions shouldn’t be too far behind.

Gear VR runs with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4, an enlarged smartphone with a 5.7 inch Super AMOLED display. The kit was first revealed in September 2014 and released three months later as an Innovator’s Edition designed for both developers and early adopters. Currently the kit only offers free content via the Oculus VR Store. It is expected that a premium option will launch in the near future, thus developers will be able to start charging for content. At the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month Oculus VR’s Nate Mitchell told VRFocus that the premium store launch and the international release were ‘decoupled’.

VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR, reporting back with any further updates on the kit.

Update: As Twitter user Sander Sneek has informed VRFocus, Gear VR is also listed on Samsung’s Dutch site for €199.99 with a 29th January shipping date.

  1. Thanks for the heads up. My Note 4 is waiting. I decided not to import from the US, so it will be interesting to see how the price compares in the UK (after tax).

  2. The Samsung Experience Stores in the UK are offering demos but they seem to be completely clueless about the actual release date. I’ve have 2 erroneous promises of stock date before the demo models were delivered followed by being (incorrectly) told after my demo that I could go online and immediately order it for next day delivery and that my demo would allow me to skip watching the mandatory 1 hour online tutorial video.

  3. Consider your experience lucky, I was informed by the staff in the Samsung Experience Store yesterday that it was likely the Gear VR wouldn’t be hitting the UK stores until summer. If that’s the case I’ll be skipping it entirely until the Note 5 is released.
Come On Samsung, get it together! You sell the Note 4 on the promise of exciting new technology for early adopters, then when people invest early on you fail to deliver the goods, make a spectacular attempt at exceptional poor customer communication and just end up looking un-professional.
    Poor show indeed.
