Gear VR Demo Units Arrive in UK Samsung Stores

Recently there’s been a lot of talk about exactly when the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will see an international launch. Creator Samsung has quietly listed the kit on several of its European websites over the past few weeks, although the UK is yet to be included. It appears as if the company is preparing to push a launch in the region however, as Gear VR demo units are now being shown off to consumers in a number of official Samsung stores around the country.

While Samsung itself hasn’t made any formal announcement about these units, adverts for the kit have been sighted across the UK. Patrick O’Luanaigh, the CEO of Gunner and The Assembly developer nDreams recently took to Twitter to post an image of one such advert, which can be seen below. His message was also replied to by Oculus VR’s Callum Underwood, who noted that he had seen the same advert in the city of Newcastle. It’s not clear exactly what content is on show for those that sample Gear VR, nor which Samsung stores currently feature a demo unit.

Gear VR runs with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4, an enlarged smartphone that features a Quad HD display which is pressed up against a pair of lenses to display side-by-side images in 3D. Recently VRFocus learned that Samsung is developing another version of the device that will run with the company’s currently unannounced Galaxy S6 smartphone, the latest in its flagship brand of handsets. The original device is also still awaiting the arrival of a premium store option for the Oculus VR Store that hosts all compatible content. Currently the store is populated with free content such as demos and videos.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Gear VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
