Gearbox Software Working in VR

Earlier today a group of hardware manufacturers and software developers made one of the first big virtual reality (VR) related announcement of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Razer, along with the likes of Sensics, announced the Open-Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) ecosystem, designed to make VR development accessible. A number of videogame developers are included in the long list of supporters of OSVR but of particular note is Gearbox Software, the developer behind the popular Borderlands series.

Gearbox Software is listed along with Techland, Bully Entertainment and Untold Games as supporters of the new concept. While this isn’t in any way confirmation that the developer is creating its own VR videogame, take note that each of the other studios is. Untold Games, for example, is working on Loading Human for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) while Bully Entertainment is developing Kira. Techland recently revealed a build of its upcoming Dying Light running on the Oculus Rift too, although its future release is uncertain at this point in time.

Gearbox Software is famously known for its first-person shooters (FPS), starting out developing expansion campaign’s to Valve’s original Half-Life and eventually making a name for itself with World War II FPS series Brothers in Arms. Last year the developer announced a new cooperative FPS named Battleborn, which is on its way to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It’s certainly a possibility that this could be a VR compatible title. The developer has also promised ‘never-before-seen reveals’ for a session at PAX South in San Antonio, Texas on the 25th January 2015, so perhaps some news could be shared there.

For now though it’s back to CES and all of the latest VR news. VRFocus will continue to follow Gearbox Software, reporting back with any further VR-related updates from the developer.
