Oculus Creator: Sony ‘doing a good job’ with Project Morpheus

Since its reveal in March 2014 Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 has shared a friendly relationship with the Oculus Rift VR HMD for PC. The companies behind the two kits have been largely eager to demonstrate a sense of cooperation over competition. That hasn’t always been the case; Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has expressed concerns over Project Morpheus before, but now it seems as if the Oculus Rift creator is feeling a lot more positive about SCE’s device.


“I think Sony is also doing a good job,” Luckey revealed in an interview with Stuff during the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week. “Like, we don’t have any kind of partnership with them but they understand the problems in VR, they understand how to fix them and they care about fixing them. There’s a lot of companies that either don’t understand how to make good VR or they do understand and they just don’t care about doing it.

“I think Sony and Oculus both have similar philosophies where we realise that our products have flaws and we know we have to fix them before shipping something to people because we don’t want to piss people off with bad products,” he concluded.

Project Morpheus was in fact revealed during the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC), the same event in which Oculus VR announced its second development kit (DK2) for the Oculus Rift. The two are largely comparable, although DK2 beats out Project Morpheus with its OLED display over the latter’s LCD one. Since then Oculus VR has revealed its Crescent Bay prototype for the Oculus Rift, taking a big leap forward from DK2. SCE however has remained tight-lipped about Project Morpheus, with no hardware updates on the device as of yet.

Last year Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe revealed that the company had invited SCE to its offices to sample the latest prototype of the Oculus Rift and request that the company makes sure Project Morpheus at least matches that standard. Just when SCE will reveal its progress with the device is not yet clear. VRFocus will continue to follow both the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, reporting back with any further updates on either.

  1. Bring it Sony……! I hope they slam the Morpheus on the consumer for no more then $150 and absent of any and all issues they speak of. I’ll be on board for sure.

  2. It’s to Palmer’s credit that he’s willing to give up precious technical information to Sony in order to make vr a success. I can’t f**king wait!
