VISR Launches Kickstarter for Low Cost Corrugated HMD

Google’s Cardboard smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has quickly risen in popularity since its reveal in 2014. That’s largely thanks to the kit’s low cost, DIY approach allowing anyone to assemble the device with the right materials. Now a new company is looking to take that same concept to a higher level of quality. This week ViSR has launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for its own smartphone-based HMD that swaps out cardboard for a more durable laminated corrugate.

Unlike Google Cardboard ViSR isn’t offering the necessary templates to create your own version of the device but is selling the fully assembled kit for just £15 GBP. The company reasons that its materials are much stronger than Google Cardboard, meaning a HMD that lasts for far longer. In terms of content, ViSR is compatible with a wide range of VR-ready Android and iOS apps. All users need do is load up the desired app on their phone and then slot it into the HMD, in front of a pair of lenses that will then display the content in 3D, with the smartphone’s on-board accelerometers filling in for head-tracking.

It’s a concept that many VR enthusiasts will be familiar with by now although ViSR does forge an identity of its own by slotting somewhere in between Google Cardboard and the overwhelming amount of plastic smartphone-based HMDs that are currently seeing release. The Kickstarter campaign is hoping to raise £25,000 by 6th February 2015. Those interested can currently pledge to be one of the first 250 HMDs to ship in March for £15. Stretch goals include a £60,000 goal that will allow the team to refine a range of demos that will be published alongside the HMD.

VRFocus will continue to follow ViSR’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on the device.
