WeArVR Reaches 150,000 VR Downloads

One of the most extensive online catalogues of virtual reality (VR) compatible content is WeArVR, a platform that hosts over 600 titles for use with the Oculus Rift, Gear VR, Google Cardboard and other head-mounted displays (HMD). The service was first launched in July 2014 and has this week hit a significant milestone. The company has just announced that it has reached a total of 150,000 downloads of its VR content.

It was Couch Knight, Epic Games’ tech demo for the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2) that reached the goal on its 2,710th download. The most downloaded title is In Paris, a series of 360 degree images of various spots in the French capital that has been accessed 4,196 times. Other popular experiences include rollercoaster simulator Helix – The Next Level, VR horror movie 11:57 and Fairy Forest DK2. The company also noted that Oculus Rift had been the most-used HMD thus far.

“The high number of downloads is fantastic news and a testament of the enthusiasm people have for virtual reality,” WeArVR co-founder Nic Mitham said of the news. “We’re also pleased by the positive response we’ve had from users, with the majority of new users hearing about WeArVR by word of mouth through online forums and sites like Reddit.

“As well as hosting virtual reality games we also provide links to games and applications available on other sites. So far we’ve referred more than 20,000 visitors to other virtual reality sites, which is great news for the virtual reality industry as a whole, especially as many of the developers are hobbyists and small teams in need of exposure.”

With the consumer release of even more HMDs expected in 2015, WeArVR will no doubt be hoping to drastically increase these figures over the course of the next 12 months. VRFocus will continue to follow WeArVR, reporting back with any further updates on the service.
