‘Built for VR’ Sci-Fi Adventure FIRMA Hits Steam Greenlight

Virtual reality (VR) is at its best when it takes players to lands and environments that would be otherwise impossible to explore. FIRMA from indie developer John Chipps-Harding aims to do just that by taking people to the moon and beyond. The title recently launched a Steam Greenlight campaign looking for enough positive votes to launch on Valve’s digital store come full release. If successful then FIRMA will come to PC and feature support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).

Set 100 years into the future, FIRMA allows players to pilot a TL-6 Transit Lander, carrying out various tasks as they travel to the moon and over to Mars before arriving at a ‘surprise, dystopian finale’. Working for a terraforming company, players complete races in which they will scavenge ruined ships and more. The plot will eventually see the protagonist come to realise that the companies paying up might not be as genuine as first through.

FIRMA has been designed and built from the ground up for modern virtual reality systems and is currently exclusive to the Oculus Rift,” the developer states in the title’s official description. “Making full use of the unlimited field of vision, you are forced to look up as you climb through obstacle rich dig sites and peer underneath the craft as you make deliveries to tricky holding platforms perched on the edge of a cliff. The worlds of FIRMA are truly immersive.”

A demo for FIRMA is currently available for anyone interested to check out. The title hopes to release in mid-2015, should everything go to plan. VRFocus will continue to follow FIRMA closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
