Crytek Bringing Brand New VR Showcase to GDC 2015

Virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts may recall last year’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany as being fairly uneventful for the technology. One of the bigger reveals of the show, however, was that Crysis and Ryse: Son of Rome developer Crytek had its own VR showcase to exhibit with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Running on the company’s own CryEngine 3, the demo allowed players to walk through a wooded environment. Crytek has kept quiet on its work in VR since that time, but will be revisiting the technology at the upcoming 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC).

Crytek has confirmed to VRFocus that it will have a new VR showcase at this year’s show for attendees to sample running on the Oculus Rift. It’s not yet clear just how this software will differ from last year’s showcase, but Crytek are promising ‘a brand new’ experience.”. VRFocus came away impressed from Cytek’s last VR showcase, which was a linear experience designed to showcase the potential of combining the immersion of VR with the graphical fidelity of the company’s engine. The piece ran with the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2) at 100 fps.

Crytek will also be showcasing its engine running on the Android operating system (OS) at the show. GDC 2015 is set to take place on 2nd – 6th March in San Francisco, Calirfonia, USA. Oculus VR itself has already confirmed that it will be attending, bringing with it the ‘latest prototypes‘ of both the Oculus Rift and Gear VR smartphone-based HMD made in partnership with Samsung. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) will also be providing ‘an update‘ for its Project Morpheus HMD at the show. There should be plenty to follow for VR fans, then.

VRFocus will be at GDC this year to deliver all of the latest updates on VR technology.
