John Carmack Talking ‘The Dawn of Mobile VR’ at GDC 2015

The 2015 Game Developers Conference is just weeks away, taking place on 2nd – 6th March 2015. The show will see virtual reality (VR) developers out in force, with both Oculus VR and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) confirming that their latest respective head-mounted displays (HMD) will be showcased, while plenty of other studios will be showing their software. A number of VR-related sessions are being hosted, one of the most important of which has recently been revealed. Legendary developer and Oculus VR employee John Carmack will be talking mobile VR at the show.

Carmack, who serves as Chief Technology Officer at the company, will be hosting a session titled ‘The Dawn of Mobile VR‘ at 11:00 PST on 4th March. The famed developer will be discussing the technical details of working with untethered VR, including revealing techniques and strategies for ‘maximizing the quality’ of VR videogames, applications and experiences. There will also be a talk on the future of VR and its impact on the mobile ecosystem as well as a Q&A, which will run until the developer is ‘chased out’. VR fans will remember that this is exactly what happened at last year’s Oculus Connect.

“Game developers will walk away with a better understanding of mobile VR, techniques and strategies for developing mobile VR content, and what the future of consumer VR might look like,” the events official description reads.

Those that have been following Oculus VR closely will know that Carmack has spent much of the past few years working in partnership with Samsung on its Gear VR smartphone-based HMD. The first iteration of the kit, dubbed an ‘Innovator’s Edition’, released in the US last year and has quickly rolled out into other territories in 2015. The first version runs with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 smartphone while VRFocus has learned that a second edition that will support the unannounced Galaxy S6 smartphone is also on the way.

VRFocus will be at GDC to deliver all of the latest VR updates.

  1. This will be a must see for some like myself. Would be awesome to be there in person. And it sure would be nice if there was actual community discussion on this website. It like a freaking ghost town!

  2. John Carmack, please just announce some official Doom 4 beta details, new pics, or a new trailer already???

    Or Rage follow-up?

    Thank you, that is all.
