Leap Motion Releases Official Plugin for Unreal Engine 4

Controller-free hand-tracking company Leap Motion has been placing a strong focus on virtual reality (VR) development for the past few months. Since releasing an official mount that allows users to connect the company’s sensor to the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) Leap Motion has hosted VR videogame jams and launched new widgets to enhance development of titles. Today sees the company partner with Epic Games as it releases an official plugin for the Unreal Engine 4 development toolset.

The plugin, which allows Unreal Engine 4 developers to quickly integrate support for the Leap Motion controller, is currently available in the Unreal Engine 4.7 source code. As a new blog post reveals, users can “Download the source from Unreal’s GitHub repository, build it, and start creating an amazing experience for desktop or VR! The plugin will also be bundled with future Unreal binary tool releases.” This will allow those developing Oculus Rift compatible videogames with Unreal Engine 4 to easily add Leap Motion support.

“Developers have long been experimenting with Leap Motion and UE4, and we’re excited to provide the official support that people have been waiting for,” the blog continues. “Currently, the plugin works by mapping Leap Motion input to virtual hand meshes, which can collide with other objects in the game world. Cherry Pie Games’ Hollow is the first game to showcase the integration. Originally created for the Leap Motion 3D Jam, it harnesses Unreal’s visual effects power and Leap Motion’s hand controls to take players on a ghostly hayride.”

Leap Motion describes this as an ‘introductory release’ with plenty  Those attending the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) next week will be able to grab a discount code for Leap Motion at the Unreal Engine booth. VRFocus will continue to follow both technologies, reporting back with any further updates on them.
