Sigtrap Games Announces VR Roguelike FPS Sublevel Zero

It’s just days until the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in which hopefully many new virtual reality (VR) videogames will be revealed. Sigtrap Games, however, isn’t waiting that long to talk about its intriguing new project, Sublevel Zero. The studio has today revealed this futuristic, roguelike first-person shooter (FPS) for PC, Mac and Linux, featuring full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). The announcement trailer for the title can currently be seen below.

Inspired by the likes of Descent and Forsaken, Sublevel Zero casts players as the pilot of a lone gunship, allowing them six degrees of freedom as they explore a large underground facility. Players will be tasked with gathering loot and crafting ancient technology as they fight in zero gravity environments in a reality that is falling apart. Crucially, the title is procedurally generated and features permanent death, meaning once players die they will start over in a different environment.

In terms of crafting, Sublevel Zero features randomly-generated weapons, upgrades and what the developer describes as ‘game-changing items’. Players will be able to craft these different aspects together to create a ship with caters to their play style. The further players dive into the title, the more items and blueprints they will unlock. As for VR support, players will be able to use the Oculus Rift’s head-tracking technology to lock-on to enemies with special weapons. Flight stick control is also set to be included.

A Steam page for Sublevel Zero is already set up and lists a summer 2015 release for the title. A more specific date for the Mastertronic-published videogame is yet to be announced, nor is there any word on if it could come to other HMDs in the future. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on it.
