Carmack: Gear VR Response ‘way better’ Than Expected

Since December 2014 Oculus VR and Samsung have been slowly rolling out the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The device has seen a very controlled consumer launch, only hitting certain countries at a time and having just launched a preview of its commerce store in the USA this week. Despite this, Oculus VR’s John Carmack recently noted that the response to Gear VR has been ‘way better’ than the company had initially expected.

Carmack said as much during his ‘Dawn of Mobile VR’ at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, USA. He noted that there had been concerns at Oculus VR about releasing the original version of Gear VR in its current state. He went on to state that the response to the released product was ‘way better than expected’ thanks to factors like being able to take the device outside of the home and show it to other people.

Carmack currently works as Oculus VR’s Chief Technology Officer and largely focuses on Gear VR itself. The company this week announced a new version of the device that supports the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone whereas the last device supported the enlarged Galaxy Note 4. Release details for the new kit are yet to be announced. VRFocus is at GDC to deliver the latest updates on VR technology.
