Elite: Dangerous to Come to PlayStation 4 ‘down the line’

Microsoft had several big announcements to make for its Xbox One console at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, USA earlier this week. The company confirmed a number of indie-developed videogames would be coming to the system. Among them was Frontier Developments’ Elite: Dangerous, which supports the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) in its already-released PC version. But what about a possible PlayStation 4 version of the title? According to Frontier Developments it will come ‘down the line’.

Studio founder David Braben recently confirmed as much on Twitter. When asked about the title appearing on platforms outside of PC and Xbox One Braben replied: “Sure. Mac of course, then down the line we will support more, including PS4. The XB1 is a timed exclusive.” It wasn’t stated if the PlayStation 4 version of the title would possibly feature support for the Project Morpheus HMD. Of course, with the Xbox One version only just announced, it’s likely far too early for even the developer itself to know if that will be the case.

Elite: Dangerous is an immersive space exploration experience in which players can travel to a wide array of star systems, many of which have been created using scientifically accurate data. Having first launched in December 2014, Frontier Developments has provided regular updates on the title, including launching its first major upgrade last month. The second update, titled Wings, arrives later this month with a focus on improving the title’s multiplayer offerings. The Mac version of the title is also said to be ‘progressing well’.

Hopefully news on a VR-enabled PlayStation 4 version of Elite: Dangerous will follow after the launch of the Xbox One version. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on it.
