Esper Dev Would ‘love to do more’ VR, Has Project Morpheus Dev Kit

There are only a handful of full, premium videogames currently available for Oculus VR and Samsung’s smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR. Among them is Esper, an intriguing first-person puzzle experience from UK-based indie developer, Coatsink Software. The title is also due to release on the Oculus Rift HMD on PC when it becomes available to consumers but, with one version now available, the obvious question comes up: could Esper come to other VR HMDs in the future?

VRFocus asked Creative Director Tom Beardsmore just that at this month’s EGX Rezzed event in London, UK. Beardsmore wouldn’t confirm specifics, but did note that the team is in possession of a development kit for the Project Morpheus HMD on PlayStation 4. “Yeah, we’re considering the other platforms; we have a Morpheus dev kit and things like that,” Beardsmore said. “But at the moment we’re focussing on Oculus and Gear VR for sure.”

What about the future of Coatsink Software? Will the studio continue to develop in VR? “We really enjoyed working on the project and we’re hoping to do more in that kind of vein,” the developer explained. “So, yeah, we have more and more ideas for the platform, especially as things evolve like the control systems and stuff. We’d love to do more.”

Esper is set in a world in which some humans have started to develop telekinetic powers. As a result, the government forms the Esper programme to test these human’s abilities. Players are cast as one such participant and must solve a variety of puzzles by moving objects using the Gear VR or Oculus Rift’s head-tracking. Puzzles are presented within one room that morphs around the player to present increasingly difficulty challenges.

VRFocus will continue to follow Esper closely. Check back later in the week for the full interview with Beardsmore.
