Gabe Newell: ‘zero perecent’ of Vive users Get Sick

One of the biggest challenges that virtual reality (VR) technology has faced over the past few years is the elimination of simulation sickness. Those that use a head-mounted display (HMD) can easily start to feel sick thanks to issues with latency when moving their head and more. It’s an issue that’s become gradually less concerning with each new iteration of devices such as the Oculus Rift. But with HTC and Valve announcing a new HMD, the Vive, this week, the latter claims that simulation sickness has practically been cured.

Valve co-founder and President Gabe Newell stated as much to the New York Times at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, USA this week. Newell claimed that ‘zero percent of people get motion sick’ when using the Vive. The HMD utilises Valve’s Steam VR system, which consists of a pair of base stations that accurately track the wearer’s movement across an area of up to 15 feet by 15 feet. Players also use a pair of controllers that allow them to interact with virtual environments.

Speaking in another interview, Newell confirmed that the Vive isn’t the only HMD that will be using Steam VR, although other companies are yet to be announced for the system. Valve is at GDC 2015 with a number of demos for the Vive including its own experience set inside Aperture Science form its famous Portal series. Developer kits for the Vive are expected to ship in spring 2015 with a full consumer launch of the kit aiming for holiday 2015.

VRFocus will continue to follow Vive, Valve and Steam VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on the technology.

  1. Amazing,i was reading an article of an guy who tested this and described all his experience, its stunning amazing and he says that with rift he pull of and fell bad after hours, but when he put VIVE he pull of then and say : I want to use more.
So the way is the tecnology it self grows, and as rift is in developer itself it will be hard to adjust all in one time. its hard metter and they will have to improve in order to “win” this battle,or they going to lose people.
