GameFace Announces EP1 Head-Mounted Console

It’s been a short while since GameFace Labs has provided an update on its GameFace virtual reality (VR) head-mounted console (HMC), an untethered device with an embedded chipset. However the company has now announced the latest iteration of its kit, dubbed GameFace EP1. The new device includes a range of new features, with the company also promising significant improvements to be made in time for the launch of the developer kit.

The GameFace EP1 features a custom printed circuit board (PCB) that houses Nvidia’s Tegra K1 chip, with the company stating that this will be upgraded to the Tegra X1 chip for the dev kit. It also features 4 GB of RAM, 9 axis sensors and an optimized version of the Android operating system (OS). The company claims it has also achieved ultra-low latency tracking with the help of Hillcrest Labs and Bosch. A custom cooling solution also uses a fan and heat sink in order to keep the device from overheating.

Elsewhere, the device features a Super OLED display provided by Samsung, with a 2560 x 1440p resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. Again, the company plans to increase the Hz for the developer kit. The screen also offers a 100 degree field of view (FOV).

GameFace Labs is also planning to add a stereoscopic camera and depth sensor to the wrong of the development kit version of the device. The Lens for said device is being kept under wraps for now.

VRFocus will continue to follow GameFace closely, reporting back with any further updates on the HMC.

  1. Whilst this is the sort of headset i want, i know its not finished but the looks are the worst of any headset so far, how well will this perform from a company not many have heard of, this along with Nvidia looking to release their own headset…unless its sold at the cheapest price i cant see this doing too well.
