Gear VR Gets New Premium Videogame: Babel Rising 3D

Earlier this month Oculus VR finally launched the commerce version of its Oculus VR Store for the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), albeit in a limited fashion. The store launched as a ‘preview’ in the USA during the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) with a handful of premium titles, but has seen little in the way of updates since. That changes this week with the release of a new paid-for videogame: Babel Rising 3D, a VR port of a mobile title by developers Advanced Mobile Applications (AMA) and Mando Productions.

Babel Rising 3D has already seen some 10 million downloads across mobile platforms. Players are cast as God and must use their divine powers to prevent scores of humans from building the Tower of Babel, depicted in the Bible as a structure built by man to unite them. Players use lightning bolts, earthquakes, meteor showers and floods in order to put a stop to the worker’s progress. As humans travel up the path of the tower, players can attack specific points to bring them toppling back down.

AMA and Mando Productions have developed specific tweaks for the Gear VR version of Babel Rising 3D, namely changing to control scheme to accommodate user head-tracking and more. The pair also added a 360-degree sky and new sound and special effects for creating a deep sense of immersion within the experience. The title is now available for $2.99 USD on Gear VR and will also be released on the upcoming, newer version of the kit, which replaces support for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone with support for the Galaxy S6 kit.

The Gear VR’s commerce store is yet to be released in territories outside of the USA and currently doesn’t support features such as in-app purchases. VRFocus will continue to follow the HMD’s progress and any and all experiences for it, reporting back with the latest updates.
