Oculus Plans to Go ‘Full Consumer’ on Next Gear VR

By Oculus VR’s own admission, the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) isn’t perfect. That’s why the company agreed with Samsung to release the first iteration of the device as an ‘Innovator’s Edition’, a label which has also been stuck to the recently announced Gear VR for S6. However, those wondering when Oculus VR will finally start to push Gear VR as a full consumer product now have their answer; with the next iteration of the device.

The company’s John Carmack announced that Oculus VR will be going ‘full consumer’ with the arrival of Samsung’s next release cycle. As the CTO reminded, Samsung tends to release new product line-ups twice a year, with the company hosting its last ‘Unpacked’ event earlier this week. With that in mind, Carmack said that fans can ‘connect the dots’ about when that might be. For reference, the last Unpacked event of 2014 took place in September.

Carmack concluded the news by issuing a call to developers that are currently thinking, ‘I want to take a risk on virtual reality’ nothing that the company is now ‘serious about this. To be more precise, he rounded off by saying that the next Gear VR would be a true consumer product. VRFocus will continue to follow the Gear VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on the HMD.
