Project Morpheus to Have a ‘good number’ of Launch Titles Says Sony

Last week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) saw Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) finally provide an update on its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. The company rounded off the debut for the new device with the promise of a consumer launch in the first half of 2016. Of course, with the launch of any new videogame hardware must come some compatible software. SCE hopes to have that covered with a ‘good number’ of titles releasing alongside Project Morpheus next year.

Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida recently said as much to Game Informer. “In terms of numbers, I think we will have quite a good number of games at launch, because they are already in development,” Yoshida stated. “But at the same time, the important thing is how compelling these experiences are. We haven’t shown the real games yet; we’ve only shown demos. Many teams are working on games – some of them we are trying to show at E3, and probably third parties as well, because we don’t have the kit to provide to many teams, including our own teams as of yet.

Yoshida went on to reveal that SCE will be able to ship more development kits for Project Morpheus out in either late April or May 2015. With that in mind, it’s hoped that SCE will have plenty to show in time for E3, which takes place on 16th – 18th June. The company traditionally holds its own press conference a day before the event which could prove to be the ideal venue for new VR compatible titles. Yoshida himself is looking forward to the event, concluding: “I’m pretty excited for it.”

Earlier in the year VRFocus speculated on some of the Oculus Rift compatible PC titles that could be making their way to Project Morpheus in the future. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
