Sony Not Planning Wireless Morpheus

Many of the key figureheads in the virtual reality (VR) industry believe that mobile VR is the future of the technology. While high-spec PCs and consoles currently provide the highest quality VR experiences, a device ideally needs to be untethered in order to provide full immersion, freeing users of a wire that hooks up to their rig. Despite this, it appears that Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has no plans for a wireless version of its own HMD, Project Morpheus, which is due to release on PlayStation 4.

SCE’s Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed as much to Gamespot in an interview at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) this week in San Francisco, California, USA. According to Yoshida, sending 1080p content to the HMD to run at 120fps requires a data transfer speed that is currently only available in wired connections. It’s hardly surprising news given that the only mobile HMDs in the works right now either have embedded chipsets or rely on a user’s smartphone to deliver the VR experience.

SCE revealed a new prototype for Project Morpheus at GDC this week. Yoshida himself unveiled the kit, which boasts an OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. It also includes a flipable front section so that users can get a quick view of the real world. Alongside the announcement came the reveal of a handful of new VR experiences including London Heist from SCE London Studio. SCE plans to launch Project Morpheus in the first half of 2016, giving the company the chance to show if off at events such as E3 throughout the remainder of this year.

VRFocus will continue to follow Project Morpheus’ progress closely, reporting back with any further updates on the kit.
