South African Tourism Using Oculus Rift to Encourage Travel

Virtual reality (VR) technology will have a huge impact on the travel industry in the future, allowing people to get a taste of potential holiday locations before they commit to them. Few countries and companies are acting on this potential at this point time, although South Africa has now been added to that small list. This week it has been announced that the country’s tourism sector is to use the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to give potential travellers a taste of what a holiday in South Africa can be like.

As reported by Travolution, South African Tourism (SAT) will be showcasing a new ‘five-minute holiday’ experience in the UK next month. The piece, created by virtual reality specialist Visualise, will allow viewers to abseil down Table Mountain in Cape Town, go kite surfing and para-gliding as well as feed elephants. There’s also a special scene showcasing shark cage-diving. This particular footage was shot using a specially 3D-printed underwater camera rig.

“We want to surprise the UK travelling public and Oculus Rift is the ideal partner for us to reach a young, tech-savvy market,” said SAT UK marketing and communications manager Juan Herrada.

“This is the first time Oculus Rift and binaural sound have been combined to create a unique, immersive holiday experience for the UK public.”

The VR experience will first be on display at Corbet Place, Brick Lane, London on 24th April and will then head to NoHo, in Manchester. Further dates will also be announced via SAT’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. The group will also be running a competition to win KLM flights to South Africa via either Heathrow or Manchester airports.

Expect to see plenty of similar examples to this experience as VR technology continues to grow in popularity. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications for VR, reporting back with the latest updates.
