Bubl Launches Mobile App to View Bublcam Content in VR

Back in 2013 Bubl ran a hugely successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Bublcam, a hand-held 360 degree camera capable of taking spherical photos and video that can then be viewed using virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs). The wait for the launch of the consumer device still continues, with the company currently promising a spring 2015 release, but fans can get a taste of what’s possible with the camera a new app, Bubl Xplor, which has launched for free this week.

Bubl Xplor

Available now on both iOS and Android operating systems (OS), Bubl Xplor curates some of the Bubl team’s favourite photos and videos collected over the past year for viewing in 360 degrees. As expected, the app includes a VR mode so that users can view these images with the help of smartphone-based HMDs like Google Cardboard. The company will be adding more of these spherical videos and photos, simply named ‘bubls’, over time. Users can even share their own favourites via email, Facebook and Twitter.

The app can of course also be used without an HMD, making it worth a look for even potential future VR owners. Users can utilise with a smartphone’s touchscreen or gyroscope to view content. Videos feature full audio capability and there’s no need to register an account at this point in time. The bublcam itself can be pre-ordered for $699 USD, securing the four-sensor camera along with a mini tripod, lens pen, USB cable and power adaptor.

Spherical videos and photos are set to play a large role in VR’s future, with Oculus VR owner Facebook recently confirming that such content will soon be added to the news feeds of its social network with Oculus Rift support. VRFocus will continue to follow bubl’s progress with the bublcam, reporting back with any further updates on the technology.
