Coatsink Nearly Doubles in Size to Work on ‘more and more’ VR Projects

Few developers in the world today can claim to have a full virtual reality (VR) compatible videogame under their belts, but UK-based Coatsink Software is one of them. Earlier in 2015 the studio released its first-person puzzle-based experience, Esper, onto the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). Its release and Coatsink Software’s other non-VR projects have clearly gone down well, as the team has today announced that it has nearly doubled in size, bringing on new staff to continue work in VR and other areas.

Coatsink Software has added 11 new staff, bringing it to 23 members in total. New hires include a Project Manager, three Programmers, three Designers, three Artists and an Animator. Many of these developers are graduates from universities in the North East of England. As Coatsink Software recently suggested to VRFocus, the developer will continue to work in VR, noting that it is ‘really invested’ in the technology.

“It’s really awesome to be expanding our talented team and to be working with such dedicated and creative developers,” Creative Director Tom Beardsmore said of the news. “On top of expanding our work on PC, console and mobile games, we’re also doing more and more Virtual Reality projects. We are really invested in VR and excited about what the future holds for both us and the platform at large.”

The studio currently hasn’t confirmed any new VR projects, though is set to deliver Esper on the Oculus Rift PC-based HMD once it has seen a consumer launch. The videogame is a first-person experience in which players are tested for telekinesis, using the Gear VR’s touchpad to manipulate objects. A date for the Oculus Rift release is yet to be revealed at this point in time. VRFocus will continue to follow Coatsink Software and its work in VR closely, reporting back with any further updates from the team.
