Crystal Rift ‘makes a lot of sense’ on HTC Vive Says Dev

With HTC and Valve revealing the Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) last month, many developers are currently deciding whether or not to devote their resources to porting experiences that are heading to the Oculus Rift HMD over to the device. Psytec Games, the studio behind upcoming VR dungeon crawling title, Crystal Rift, is one of those developers. A potential port of the title is looking hopeful, as the team’s Jon Hibbins recently told VRFocus that Crystal Rift would ‘make a lot of sense’ on HTC Vive.

“We’d like to be on everything,” Hibbins said in an interview that will be published in full later this week. “For us, it’s all about the VR; we absolutely want to be on every headset that we can. We think that we’ve got an amazing game that will suit VR across the board. Obviously the new headset, Vive and Steam VR, we want to be on that. It makes a lot of sense with our space as well. A lot of the uniqueness of the dungeon is that you can peer around things and walk around stuff and I think our engine would fit great for that. So, yeah; ambition to do everything, bandwidth to do most.”

HTC Vive is expected to launch for consumers in time for holiday 2015. The HMD is the first to use Valve’s Steam VR system, which utilises a pair of base stations to offer user tracking in an area of up to 15-feet by 15-feet. It’s a concept that could mix well with Crystal Rift, which allows users to move one step at a time on a square-based grid. The title is also due to release on Oculus VR and Samsung’s smartphone-based HMD, Gear VR. An Early Access version of the Oculus Rift edition is expected to launch later this month.

VRFocus will continue to follow Crystal Rift‘s progress closely. Check back later in the week for the full interview with Hibbins.

  1. Nah I don’t know how it would make “sence” …I see in Crystal Rift you have to move across huge distances.
