DiRT Rally Steam Launch Includes Oculus Rift Support

Codemasters have long been keen supporters of virtual reality (VR) in their PC videogame releases, despite there being no head-mounted displays (HMDs) officially available to consumers playing on PC. Along with GRID Autosport receiving official Oculus Rift support via a patch sometime after launch, last year’s Toybox Turbos was designed with VR in mind. Now, it seems that this week’s launch of DiRT Rally has been delivered with that same enthusiasm.

DiRT Rally is the continuation of the DiRT videogame series which has seen four iterations – including the alternative racing of DiRT Showdown – and at present is only confirmed for a PC release. According to Codemasters: “DiRT Rally captures the essence of what makes rally unique – that sense of trying to remain in control of your emotions, as you hurtle along dangerous, undulating roads at breakneck speed, aiming to squeeze everything out of your car whilst knowing that one crash could irreparably harm your stage time.”

DiRT Rally launched via Steam Early Access just yesterday, but the official description of the title from Codemasters offered no mention of VR nor the Oculus Rift HMDs. It was only when consumers got their hands on the in-development build that it was revealed that official support for the second iteration of the Oculus Rift development kit (aka DK2) has been included as standard.

VRFocus has contacted Codemasters for further information on the Oculus Rift support and will bring you any further details, including a hands-on preview, as soon as they’re available.
