Though it might not seem like it when working within the industry, plenty of people are still yet to sample virtual reality (VR) technology. For the uninitiated, it’s vital that developers provide comfortable, immersive experiences to make their first time with a head-mounted display (HMD) a good one. That’s what Team HEADGEAR is focusing on with its entry into the ongoing Oculus Mobile VR Jam for the Gear VR smartphone-based device. The team is working on a causal first-person shooter (FPS) named WE COME IN PEACE…
This is a VR videogame that’s specifically designed for first-time users. Placed in a ship above the Earth’s atmosphere, players are given a full 360 degrees of control as they are tasked with fending off waves of alien invaders. The title uses the Gear VR’s head-tracking technology to aim a gun turret at incoming enemies, keeping them at bay. As a casual experience, Team HEADGEAR has designed the title to have a shallow learning curve. Each level sees players connected to a different gun turret above Earth.
Team HEADGEAR recommends playing WE COME IN PEACE… on a swivel chair to allow for easy aiming. The title also uses spatialised audio to gives players a sense of direction in which enemies are coming from. The project itself is still in early stages, hoping to add a scoring mechanic, additional weapons, a multiplayer mode and enemy fire in the future.
WE COME IN PEACE… is one of over 130 entries into the Mobile VR Jam. As part of the videogame category, the title is competing for a $200,000 USD grand prize as well as $100,000, $50,000 and $10,000 runner up prizes. VRFocus will continue to follow all VR Jam entrants, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
