Oculus Announces VR Jam Judges, Includes Telltale Games Dev

Earlier in the year virtual reality (VR) specialist Oculus VR launched a brand new development jam for its smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR. The company is offering up a total of $1,000,000 USD in prizes, looking for teams from around the world to create brand new videogames and apps for the device, which was developed in partnership with Samsung. This week sees Oculus VR announce a long list of judges that will be looking at entrants, including internal members and others currently working in VR.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey and Oculus VR CTO John Carmack will be on the panel. Also included from Oculus VR itself is Lydia Choy from the San Francisco offices. Joining the panel from outside Oculus VR are Funomena co-founder and CEO Robin Hunicke, DreamWork’s DreamLab’s Brad Herman, Unity Asset Store manager Caitlyn Meeks-Ferragallo, The Workshop Entertainment’s Laralyn McWilliams, Epic Games lead programmer Nick Whiting, Telltale Games’ Caryl Shaw and IndieCade Chair for Education and Advancement Jeremy Gibson.

It’s certainly interesting to see a member of Telltale Games join the panel in Shaw, an executive producer at the company. The developer has risen to fame over the past few years for titles such as The Walking Dead and is currently working on the likes of Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones. This is the first time that the studio has had its name directly connected to VR; could it be working on something of its own for the technology?

Submissions for the VR jam are set to open on 13th April 2015 at 12:00 PDT. Entrants must then submit the pitch for their title by 20th April, followed by screenshots to show its progress on 27th April. A video of the project is due on 4th May before the final build must be submitted on 11th May. These judges will look at the submitted materials to select fund and innovative ideas, with the top 20% of each track going through to the next round. The winners will be announced on 3rd June at 10:00.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Oculus VR Jam, reporting back with any further updates on the project.
