Oculus’ Gear VR Jam Has Seen 132 ‘awesome’ Entrants so far

Over the course of the past month Oculus VR has been preparing for the launch of a new mobile virtual reality (VR) jam to promote its smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR. The competition, which tasks developers with creating new VR videogames and experiences for the device, finally got underway this week. While it’s still in its early stages, the Mobile VR Jam is off to a promising start, as Oculus VR has revealed that it has already had 132 drafts submitted from hopeful contestants.

Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam organiser, Reddit user Erisana, revealed as much in the first of a series of Q&A sessions about the jam that went live this week. When asked how many entries the jam had seen so far, Erisana replied: “132 awesome drafts so far. The team is loving them.” Developers have until 20th April 2015 to submit an entry into the jam, meaning there’s still plenty of time for this number to grow. Following that, entrants will be expected to supply weekly updates on their progress including screens and videos, with a final build to be submitted on 11th May.

The judges panel for the Mobile VR Jam includes the likes of Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and John Carmack as well as members of development teams such as Telltale Games. The jam is split into two separate categories, one being for videogames and the other for experiences. The winner of the ‘Platinum’ award in the videogame category will secure some $200,000, while ‘Gold’ videogame winners will earn $100,000. The ‘Silver’ prize for videogames is worth $50,000, while ‘Bronze’ offers $10,000. For apps, ‘Platinum’ gets $100,000, ‘Gold’ earns $50,000, ‘Silver’ is worth $30,000 and ‘Bronze’ earns $10,000.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Mobile VR Jam closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
