Stompz Cancels Kickstarter Campaign to Improve Hardware and Strategy

Last month VRFocus reported on the launch of a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for a new form of input for virtual reality (VR) experiences named Stompz. The kit’s creator was looking to raise $100,000 USD in order to bring the foot-based controller to market. Things haven’t quite gone to plan, however, and this week has seen Stompz cancel that campaign having raised just $10,267 of its intended goal. The Kickstarter effort was just days away from its intended closing date of 10th April 2015.

“The VR field is still mostly untested waters, and we made a few missteps preparing for this Kickstarter,” the Stompz team reasoned in an update to the campaign page. “We missed the mark on telling our story and, while we reached those in our core group, we failed to get our message out to the whole community.

“Now, it is with surprising optimism that we would like to cancel our Kickstarter, and use your feedback to upgrade our hardware, rethink our strategy, and apply the lessons we learned from this Kickstarter to create an even better product and a new campaign that will knock your socks off.”

Stompz consists of two motion controllers that are strapped to the user’s feet. Combined with head-mounted displays (HMDs) such as the Oculus Rift, Stompz allows for players to then use their feet to move within the VR world, tilting in any direction to navigate areas. Players can customise inputs for comfortable turning, crouching and more and can strap the controllers to other areas of the body for alternative means of control. The Kickstarter campaign had been offering early bird versions of the kit for just $99, with first shipments aiming to take place in November 2015.

It’s not clear when Stompz will be seen again, though it sounds like the developers may be planning a second attempt at crowd-funding in the future. VRFocus will continue to follow Stompz closely, reporting back with any further updates on the device.
