Unity 5 Getting Project Morpheus Support Soon, Image Suggests

If the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) was first and foremost about virtual reality (VR) hardware, development engines followed closely behind. Not only did Epic Games announce that its Unreal Engine 4 is now available for free, but Unity released and detailed its Unity 5.0 engine, featuring a range of improvements. The company is yet to implement support for some major VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) with Unity 5.0, but it appears that integration with Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus may be arriving soon.

The news was teased at Unity’s 2015 Unite Conference in Japan over the past weekend. As revealed by Twitter user Somelu, a session focusing on Project Morpheus, which runs with the PlayStation 4, suggested that a plug-in for the device would be arriving ‘as soon as possible’. An image of the engine being used with Project Morpheus was also posted and can currently be seen below. In it, a developer can be seen selecting a VR option from what appears to be a list of display resolutions.

With Project Morpheus set to arrive in the first half of 2016, developers using Unity 5.0 will be hoping that support arrives in the near future so that they can prepare their titles for the kit’s launch, if not soon after. SCE reintroduced the device at GDC 2015 last month, revealing a new 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The device even uses a ‘Reprojection Mode’ to simulate titles running at 120 fps in-HMD when they are really running at 60 fps on console.

SCE will be bringing Project Morpheus to plenty of other events in 2015 in the run up to its 2016 launch. A more specific release date or price are yet to be revealed. VRFocus will continue to follow the device closely, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
