VR in Culture: Marvel’s Fantastic Four Use VR to Control Galactus in Silk #4

Virtual reality (VR) is finally gearing up for a consumer release, but it appears that some of the most famous superheroes in the Marvel universe already have their hands on a head-mounted display (HMD). The Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, the stretchable scientist also known as Mr. Fantastic, has recently been spotted wearing his own VR kit in the pages of the upcoming Silk #4. VR makes its Marvel debut as scribed by writer Robbie Thompson and drawn by artist Annapaola Martello.

A preview of the comic, first seen over on Newsarama, shows Richards wearing a pink HMD in world to assume the role of a virtual version of one of the team’s greatest enemies, Galactus. The hero’s movements are seemingly synchronised within the experience in which Silk, a recently-established heroine that gained her powers from the same spider that once bit Spider-Man, takes down the devourer of worlds. Mr. Fantastic’s HMD appears to be tethered to one of his super computers at the Fantastic Four’s iconic home in the Baxter Building.

This is just the latest example of VR appearing in pop-culture. Many TV shows such as South Park have already poked fun at the likes of the Oculus Rift and this is only set to continue as the technology grows in popularity.

Of course, Marvel itself has already dipped its toes into real VR applications. The company has previously showcased an experience for Samsung and Oculus VR’s Gear VR smartphone-based HMD that promotes the upcoming blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s not clear if this experience will be released to the public, though the movie’s release draws near, opening on 23rd April 2015 in Europe and 1st May in the USA. Meanwhile, comic book rivals DC already has its first VR experience in the works based on the popular Batman: The Animated Series.

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all uses of VR, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
